Stone Forest Retreat in Cedaredge provided the perfect setting for the first Western Slope Regional Gathering hosted by Colorado ManREACH. Eighteen men participated in the weekend event, June 27-29, 2008. The smaller gathering offered those who attended the opportunity to connect more quickly as a group. As always, the Friday night and Saturday and Sunday morning heart circles were intimate and the sharing profound.

Saturday afternoon, the group joined in a lively conversation about the opportunities and challenges that rural G/B/Q men find as they strive to create community. Each man spoke also about what he could and would do to nurture a healthier, more holistic community for himself and others on the Western Slope. There was no shortage of ideas and many men committed themselves to becoming more involved. Longer breaks in between the scheduled activities allowed more time to meet new friends, catch up with old ones, and enjoy summertime in Colorado. A nature walk and massage workshop rounded out the day's activities.

Sunday morning came too quickly for most and brought with it the mixed feelings that can arise when leaving a gathering. Our growing community does not cease to exist at the close of a ManREACH gathering, however. As always, an ending is followed by a new beginning. Now is the time for us to return home, revel in the glow of a weekend filled with unconditional love and support, remember what we have learned about ourselves and others and use that new knowledge and energy to continue creating the community we want and deserve.
